the only lake on hawaii island is lake waiau: ka wai o pele evaporated in 2018 during the 2018 kilauea eruption, and the lake inside the kilauea caldera was very short lived. while the hike to get to lake waiau is very short, it is difficult to do due to the elevation. this lake sits at about 3970 meters above sea level. lake waiau is usually at its biggest during the spring, and by the end of the summer it shrinks significantly. lake waiau is located on mauna kea.
