After throwing up in my mouth at how bad the stock textures on the level 100 RDM Roseblood coat looked, I decided to examine the model, and discovered SE shortchanged the color data textures on all of the new 7.0 gear, making them a quarter of the resolution of the normal map, and resulting in texture pixelation reminiscent of 90s games.
This is a quick and dirty fix. It's not perfect, but I wanted to see how well it would work, and how much effort was involved. I redrew the red channel of the color map from scratch to give properly detailed color divisions, and applied a soft blur to the green channel to remove some of the chunky pixels from the texture weathering.
Results speak for themselves.
I'm assuming SE cut the color map size to save space for consoles. If that's the price we had to pay for a second dye channel, I'm thinking I'd rather have good textures again. I'm just hoping SE can be convinced that the quality is worth the extra storage space going forward.
I may do more of these depending on how much my brain screams at the rest of the new gear.
